"A weird idea...?" Maya's eyelashes flutter in confusion, but as she listens, the explanation makes sense. They're really tiny now, and they weren't before. To think all this weird stuff could have already been there is... more than a little bit unnerving, and she furrows her brow as she considers the possibility.
Not for too long, though. She - and Charle, for that matter, as Maya's hand drops from her mouth - lets out a small shriek as he puts his hand out. Instinctively she's about to reach out as if she could drag a grown man away from it but stops short, and looks sheepish.
Nothing... happened? At least not immediately.
"So... I guess we can scratch of 'miniature black hole.'"
Togusa pulls his hand back, startled, and looks at Maya in alarm. "Was that a possibility on the table!?" He eyes the swirling hole much more cautiously now. "I mean- not that I have a better explanation?" He uses that hand to scratch the back of his head.
"So," he very slowly says, "whether this is another trick by Retrospec, or an unintentional side effect of what they've been doing, we probably shouldn't stay here." Togusa will prioritize the safety of another person over his curiosity. He carefully takes a few steps back. "Because right now those are my two bets for why we're seeing this. Whatever it is."
She smiles sheepishly at the question. "Well, it's the first thing that came to mind...! Sorry, my brain can kinda. Run off on its own, sometimes... heh!"
Either way she takes a wide step back away from the crack. Just in case.
She does take another fleeting look at it, before nodding to the older man. "Y- yeah, I can't exactly disagree...!"
Of course, she'd hedge on the side of discretion in what he says. He'd probably have a better idea of things than she does, and since neither of them do...
"It could be dangerous," Charle says, floating behind Maya's head as if that'd protect her.
"Honestly," Maya mutters, taking another couple steps away. "I'd say there's a pretty good chance it is, in one way or another...."
Togusa can't help but smile back at Maya. "It's all right. Given all the things that have been going on here, it's a reasonable idea. Not something I thought of."
But Togusa can't justify looking into this with someone else here. So. Okay. That leaves a completely different mystery to unravel. Because Togusa is now looking back at the floating pink bunny rabbit. "So then how does your new friend here fit into things?" He looks between the two of them. Or wait. He looks at Charle excitedly. "Or! Do you remember anything? From before you came here?" They've never had something that was mailed to anyone who could, well, speak, or remember.
Maya is doing a job of putting just a bit more distance between herself and the crack. "If we get back to normal size, maybe it'd be safer to just... take a microscope to it or something..."
She blinks quickly at the next line of questioning though, both she and Charle exchanging glances. The bunny speaks first, shaking her head. "No, I don't... really remember much of anything...! The only things I've been able to remember are, well..." http://strongestheart.dreamwidth.org/ "The same things I remember," Maya finishes for her, puffing her cheeks a bit. She'd thought at first maybe Charle could actually give them SOMETHING, but... no deal. "Or whatever visions I've had with her also in them. Whatever you want to call them. She just sort of... came in the mail one day. In a box."
Charle suddenly looks annoyed.
"They were nice enough to punch airholes in it, though!"
Togusa frowns sympathetically at Charle. "That's horrible. I'm sorry they treated you that way." Wait. Togusa hesitates, because this whole situation is creeping up on 'too strange.' It's disappointing that the rabbit doesn't remember anything, but he just asked a floating pink rabbit if it remembered anything.
Togusa has to think carefully on how to word this. "What... Well, I can't just come out and ask 'what are you?' Because, obviously, you're a rabbit," Togusa gestures at Charle. "But not an ordinary rabbit." His brow wrinkles tightly in confusion. "So, I suppose, how are you two connected?" He looks between Charle and Maya. "If you- remember the same things?"
It's only creeping up on too strange now? You, sir, must have a high bar for that. Either way, Charle nods in appreciation to the man. Strange though she may be, she's thankful!
"We're definitely connected, somehow!" Maya agrees, nodding. She puffs her cheeks, thinking about what she wants to say. "Friends of mine got other little animal friends like this, too... One is a blue puppy with a diamond on his head, and a little bear with a clover! And of course, Charle here has a heart..."
She tilts her head to one side. "My friend Rachel proposed that Charle must be named after the King of Hearts, Charles, and they're all connected to cards somehow but..."
She makes empty motions with her hands. "Connecting the dots there is another thing."
There are more of them? Togusa looks briefly surprised, but he eventually nods. Playing cards? It's an interesting idea and maybe something else that Togusa can keep an eye out for. But he smiles gently in sympathy at Maya's last comment. "It's got to be frustrating when you're just getting little bits and pieces of memory without any greater context." Glances at Charle, "for both of you. But I'm sure you'll figure it out."
He holds out his hands to gesture at the both of them. "It's good, though, that you two already knew that you were friends. Everything Retrospec is doing will be easier to deal with, if you've got somebody going through it with you." He smiles again, trying to be reassuring. "I think we're all gonna be okay, so long as we all keep talking to each other. But sometimes there's no substitute for a really close confidant."
"Boy, is it ever!" Maya nods, agreeing with that first part. She could certainly ELABORATE, but she's not going to throw an infodump at the man unless prompted.
She blinks a little bit at his next few comments, but smiles brightly in response. Charle does as well, albeit a little more hesitantly. "Yeah, that's true! This is all really scary, but it'd be a lot more so if I didn't have people to fall back on... and knowing I always have someone now is a little bit reassuring!"
Togusa's eyebrows raise in curiosity. "Oh yeah? I haven't been remembering anything at all, so, if it's none of my business," he holds up a hand, "then just tell me. But I'm kind of curious about what other people have been seeing."
It's genuine curiosity, since Togusa, himself, has no sort of clue about himself, where he fits in to the picture of what everyone else is going through. There's a joke going around that he might be part of a control group, which is feeling like less of a joke every day.
